forkd

forkd is an improved sandbox run time for Firecracker-based micro virtual machines. Using a method of copying a preloaded main VM image (copy-on-write), it creates much faster micro VM samples compared to traditional boot processes. The system allows for branching (branch) and memory-level insulation by taking a snapshot of the state of a virtual machine at runtime.

What can it do?
  • Using a pre-configured main VM image, you can start a large number of isolated micro VMs within milliseconds.
  • By taking snapshots of the current state of a working AI tool, you can create new branches that continue from the point it left to its operations.
  • With memory sharing and the copy-on-write mechanism, you can quickly build sandbox environments using system resources efficiently.

Restored children share one writable rootfs — concurrent sandboxes corrupt each other

“Restores are not safe to run concurrently against one snapshot, and the failure is silent corruption rather than an error. Filing with the evidence because it cost us ~12h to attribute, and because the fix is a design decision I would rather ask you about than assume. ##…”
